Helio Hostel Sapporo

The facilities were ordinary, though they seemed generally well kept. What bothered me was seeing some staff visibly uncomfortable when foreign guests couldn’t speak Japanese, instead of trying to communicate with them. The basic services were there, but treating guests like a burden is an attitude that needs serious thought. If serving people who don’t speak Japanese is too difficult, perhaps the place should only accept local guests. Thank you.

The rooms have noticeably more space than you’d expect at a capsule hostel, and the location puts lots of good spots within easy reach. The downstairs cafe is a little pricey, but its work area is lovely, with WiFi and a great playlist. The place left a strong impression of Sapporo for me. I’d have liked the upstairs lounge to feel more casual, though that’s a small thing.

The location is superb, with loads of shops and restaurants just a few minutes’ walk away. I’d recommend it for solo travellers. I stayed in the women’s dorm on the third floor, and despite all the beds, it was fairly quiet at night. Most guests were considerate, and the atmosphere was calm. Compared with other hostels I’ve stayed at in Japan recently, there weren’t as many obnoxiously loud westerners. The bed was comfortable, and it was handy to store luggage in the cubicle and valuables in the safe box. The shower room was well designed and tidy, and the shared areas were clean. I also liked having 24-hour key-card access to the coffee shop seating area. At night I could have a beer, listen to music, and use my laptop, and early in the morning I could bring in breakfast from the convenience store.

The location was really good, and the staff were friendly and fashionable. You can leave your bags early, and the bedroom has enough space for your luggage. There’s a cozy cafe, and the amenities are complete. Slippers cost ¥100. Reception isn’t open 24 hours, so for an early checkout you just leave your card there.
