The room heater made a loud gurgling sound all night, and by then I didn't want to ask to move again. I had a room for three with a regular toilet, no bidet, and a small shower and tub. I also skipped the onsen. The hotel has a shuttle to Sapporo, but it was full when I asked about it. I booked this extra night after deciding to arrive a day early, since my other hotel was full. It was the week before the snow festival, so many places were booked. I wanted to try a more traditional Japanese stay with mats, a mattress, and a shared onsen, and I did get that experience. Still, this seemed like a place geared toward smokers and perhaps local guests. They first put me on a smoking floor, where the smell hit as soon as I stepped off the elevator. They changed my room and it was better, though the building felt old and smoke still carried over. The rules didn't seem strict. What really irritated me was breakfast. My included meal was rice and a small lettuce salad, while a Japanese man was served more of the traditional Japanese breakfast I'd gotten used to. I felt I was treated differently as a foreigner. I'd booked through trip.com and paid more than twice the going price, so I expected better service.

Guests can use the onsen, and the rooms have a pleasant old Showa-era feel.

The room key isn't marked, and after I lost mine they said they had to replace the lock and keys for security instead of simply making a copy. They wanted me to change rooms and pay extra for the move. In my opinion, that was an incompetent decision that wasted both their money and mine. If you lose the key, be prepared to speak Japanese. The tatami-style room wasn't well maintained, though it was comfortable on my back. I'd look somewhere cheaper.

I booked just a few days ahead for the Snow Festival and got lucky when a cancellation came up. Two nights cost under 30,000 yen at that busy time, which felt like a good deal. My room was a 6.5-tatami Japanese-style room, with a shared bath and toilet. The bath area had a tub, cold bath, and sauna. I went back often to warm up and take a break between sightseeing. Meals weren't part of my plan, but you can contact the hotel to order breakfast buffet or curry. Since Nijo Market is close and some restaurants open in the morning, it may be worth checking those out while sightseeing. It's southeast of the TV tower, around a 5-10 minute walk, which seemed handy for sightseeing. Getting there from Sapporo Station looked a little awkward; from New Chitose, transferring to the subway at Shin-Sapporo might be easier. The only thing that bothered me was the thin curtains. It felt as if people across the street might be able to see into the room.
