Nakamuraya Ryokan

The location and price are hard to beat, with Hokkaido university botanic park next door, shops only a few blocks away, and good restaurants nearby. The rooms are huge by Japanese standards, so three people can sleep without bumping into each other. It’s an old-fashioned ryokan, and the rooms and hotel look very dated, but everything was kept clean and in decent condition. You can have traditional home-style Japanese meals in your room, with fair quality and enough food. The public bath stays open all night, handy after a late drinking night or when jet lagged. Staff speak very little English. A good budget pick if you want more space and are wary of staying in a youth hostel.

The public bath was clean, peaceful, and relaxing, and we both found the futons and pillows comfortable. We really liked our tatami room during our two-night stay at Nakamuraya Ryokan. Breakfast cost a reasonable amount and came in generous portions. The staff were very welcoming even though we’re foreigners and don’t speak Japanese. It was good value, and the location worked well for us, close to Odori Park and the places we wanted to visit. I’d happily stay again if I return to Sapporo.

She was so kind and kept searching everywhere for a heat pack because I was freezing. It really touched me. The breakfast was tasty and very traditional, and only ¥12000.

I loved the tatami room and the communal bath, and the reception staff were genuinely friendly. The place is in a new building, though the interior feels close to an old Ryokan. Their English is limited, but that didn’t take away from the welcome. Tattoos are okay as long as they’re not too large. Breakfast is 1000Y, not a huge serving, but worth the price. I’d definitely recommend staying here.
