Sapporo International Youth Hostel

The dorm was super affordable for a four-bed room. The bathrooms and showers were clean, and there were enough for the travelers. The staff were very friendly and knowledgeable, and switched to English when my Japanese wasn’t enough. The large supermarket is within walking distance, and it’s worth going in the evening for discounts. The hostel is a little far from the center, though it’s a nice area for a walk. The dining room is spacious and has a quiet bookstore or library feel, with people reading newspapers. You can bring in outside food and drinks, and there’s a small kitchen area that may have extra items you need. I was surprised at first to see many older guests in a youth hostel, though there’s nothing wrong with that. The room had four single beds arranged randomly, with no small desk, partitions, lamp, or other personal touches. I wasn’t asking for much, but some basic amenities and even a little privacy would’ve been welcome. The mattress was too thin, and I could feel the springs.

We stayed during the February 2025 winter festival, and the staff were polite and friendly. Our flight was delayed, but they stayed late so we could check in. The room was clean and comfortable, with air conditioning, and the Japanese bath was relaxing. The subway and a konbini are both five minutes away. I’d stay here again if I visit Sapporo.

There’s a hot bath in the basement, which was great after spending the whole day traveling around. The shared toilets were super clean, and there’s also a small kitchen and dining area. Our room stayed clean and warm enough in winter, and the price was fairly cheap. The hostel is a five-minute walk from the subway and a 15-minute ride from Sapporo JR train station.

I wouldn’t come back. Having to pay for a towel seems ridiculous, and the midnight curfew is ludicrous when a door code could let guests come and go without being treated like children. There weren’t enough outlets near the bed, either. The AC wouldn’t go below 22 Celsius, so the room stayed hot at night.
