Akiu Onsen Hotel Hananoyu

The open air bath onsen has a lovely river view, and the restaurant has a pleasant atmosphere with families and everyone enjoying the shared space. The hotel feels warm and comfortable, even though the furnishings aren’t new or innovative. I chose a single room with a washroom when I booked and stayed in the main building, not “Ren”building. It was February, with -2 degree temperatures outside, and the reception area and corridor to the restaurant felt too cold. The staff could make those areas warmer. If you’re sure of your stay, reserve the free pick up bus 2-3 days ahead, as it may fill up.

The Western style room was spacious and new, and the view from the open hot spring was lovely. There were lots of welcome drinks, ice cream, and snacks at no charge, and I was surprised to find free masks, too. It’s easy to get here from the city. We had such a good time, thanks.

Hotel Hana No Yu is an onsen hotel in Akiu village. I spent one night there and tried the women's only floor. The staff were helpful and made an effort with English, but my Japanese is poor, so I’d bring Google Translate.

There’s a relaxation center, resting rooms, an outdoor foot bath that’s free, and a children’s game area suited to ages 1-5, so you can spend time there before or after the onsen. The family bath is a rotenburo with an awesome view, and the pool is large enough for a family with two children. In February the water was about 42 degrees, even though it was outdoors. Prices are charged separately for the room and each person, so check the price list. It’s one of the more reasonable places around, and the best seasons are fall or sakura season.
