There’s a small carpark on site, and the prices are reasonable for this area. The place sits on a little hill by the Pacific Ocean on the Izu peninsula, and it feels like a tucked-away gem. The rooms are cute, most with ocean views, the food was good, and the service was immaculate. They have two private onsens, which you reserve when you check in.

The balcony and natural light made the room feel especially refreshing. Hotel Sea Shell Shimoda has bright white rooms with soft blue touches and an Ibiza-style Mediterranean look. It felt airy, roomy, relaxing, and very much like a beach resort. The property is peaceful and well cared for, and it’s close to the beach, making it a nice choice for a stylish coastal break in Shimoda.

The view from our lovely room was amazing, and the air conditioning worked great. An English-speaking staff member helped us during our stay. We hadn’t realized the menu was almost entirely fish, which was our mistake since we’re not fish people, but the staff went out of their way to make us a different breakfast. A++ service. Thank you!

I wish we’d stayed longer. It’s such a relaxing spot, with a beach view and a warm private pool where you can unwind and feel at home. They also offer a private breakfast by the pool, which is quite an experience. It depends on the weather, and they only allow it when it isn’t windy.

We found it very comfortable and restful, with a lovely elevated view of the ocean from the rooms. Both dinner and breakfast were excellent and filling, and the staff were friendly and helpful.
