Minshuku Kanjiya (Adults Only)

Getting out for walks around the village early or late, when it was quiet and there were fewer people around, was lovely. The old Japanese farmhouse atmosphere came with modern bathroom amenities, and the meals had lots of small dishes that were delicious and filling by the end. Our host was friendly and welcoming, and between a few English words and hand signs, the language barrier wasn't a problem. It was a unique, wonderful stay, and I'd highly recommend it. We began booking by emailing the host directly through their website and using Google Translate.

Once most of the tourists had left Shirakawa-Go, the night here felt magical and peaceful. All we heard were birds, frogs, streams, and rain. Our classic tatami room had a little Japanese porch and a patio table and chairs facing the mountains, with fresh air flowing in. There were no other guests, so we had two sinks to ourselves, and the lovely wooden bathing room could fit two people in the shower. Dinner and breakfast felt like a feast, served in a beautifully decorated dining room, and the service was lovely. Free parking was included. My only complaint was the abrupt 9AM checkout. It felt especially rushed in the rain, when we would have liked another hour or two to relax in the mountain-view room. Shirakawa-Go can feel like a tourist zoo during the day, but our night there after the crowds passed was a delight.

The walls are thin, so noise could be an issue if you're a light sleeper. Still, when everyone is considerate, guests make very little noise in the evening and early morning, and it didn't take away from my stay. The room and shared bathroom were clean, the room was spacious, and the cedar bathtub was relaxing. Both meals were spectacular and left me full, and the host was kind and accommodating. Staying overnight at this traditional inn was the best part of my whole 2 week trip to Japan. Once the last tour buses leave and before the first ones arrive, you can feel the quiet of this small mountain town. I'd highly recommend staying a night to get away from the day trippers. The people, meals, and accommodations were fantastic. Staying in these smaller villages after the crowds leave, then waking to look around before they arrive, is an amazing way to experience them.
