We had a great time at Gensaku. The owner was kind, and the food she made was incredibly tasty. The house is beautiful and right in the center of Shirakawa, with clean, pleasant facilities that are lovely to relax in. Absolutely recommended!

We loved walking around the area, and staying at Gassho was a great experience. It’s right in Ogimachi, among many of the Gassho houses, with a small car park in front of the minshuku. The room was clean and spacious enough for four. The toilet and bath are shared with two guests from the other room, but they were clean and comfortable to use. It felt cozy, not cramped. The futons were very comfortable, and I had some of my best sleep there. The owner’s meals were delicious and served in the dining area beside a working traditional hearth. We stayed in mid-December 2023 and booked through the Shirakawago Tourism Association. Otherwise, you may need to call the operator, since most don’t list an email address. It’s a good idea to book two months ahead, especially in peak season, because places fill up close to the date. I’d strongly recommend staying at Gassho for the experience.

The food was plentiful, and the rice was especially fluffy since the family grows it themselves. Dinner was at 6 pm and breakfast at 7:30 am. There’s a public onsen five minutes away on foot, and guests get a discount. The hosts kept trying to chat with us and help out, even though I can’t speak or understand Japanese. They also helped take photos. It was freezing and snowy when we arrived at 10:30 am. We walked around, visited museums, ate plenty of street food, then checked in at 3 pm. The place is clean and simple, and comfortable if you need somewhere near the bus interchange. Guest rooms are on the ground floor. The four of us had adjoining rooms and shared the toilet and bath facilities. Highly recommend.

The family are incredibly welcoming and the food was great. It’s a traditional Shirakawago home with a pampas grass roof, and they’re working hard to keep the tradition alive. Winter weather can get cold.

After 5 pm, with the tourists gone, the place feels like heaven. It’s peaceful, the views and surroundings are lovely, and the food is nice. The stay was awesome. The owner doesn’t speak much English, but we used Google Translate to communicate, and it worked!
