The onsen was the highlight for us. Sitting in a hot outdoor bath while snow fell around us was an experience that’s hard to explain until you’ve had it. The property had enough to keep us occupied when a restaurant incident, which we understood was a short circuit, brought firefighters and temporarily blocked the roads. We were stuck for much of the day, but made handmade coasters and played in the snow at the Family Snow Park. We spent two nights at the Eco Institute over New Year with five people in a Japanese-style room. It felt cramped for our group. Looking back, a second room would have been better, though the year-end prices would have made it expensive. Dinner was a French course, which might be a refreshing change for local guests but may not suit every tourist looking for traditional flavors. Breakfast was a buffet with a modest selection. The place had its charm, but the tight room and food style left the stay a little short of what we expected. We’d give it another try with a different room and a chance to do other activities.

We had a good view from our rooms. I booked two twin rooms with private bathrooms, and both the rooms and the food were nice. Breakfast and dinner were delicious.

The guided walk offered by the hotel was why we chose Toyota Shirakawa-Go Eco-Institute, and it helped us learn about the area and feel at ease exploring afterward. Thanks to Kagawa-san for suggesting the trail. We got to see a little more of the nature around us. The facilities were thoughtfully arranged, and we loved relaxing in the onsen after a day out. We were also surprised by how much we enjoyed the restaurant. The chef’s meals were creative and delicious, with Japanese ingredients interpreted as French cuisine and balanced beautifully. We especially liked the variety of desserts, a nice touch when it’s hard to choose just one. Thank you! It was a lovely place to wind down at the end of our long trip in Japan. ☺️😆

The meals were fantastic, and the staff were helpful and courteous. We booked one night with half board while exploring Shirakawa-go, but heavy snow meant we didn’t see much around the hotel. Our family stayed in a tatami room with an attached toilet but no bath, so we got to use the Onsen, which everyone loved.

The indoor and outdoor onsen were both lovely, and we really liked the loungewear and tea. Our room was simple but very clean and cozy, and we had a great stay. The hotel sits in a beautiful mountain setting, about a 10 min drive from Shirakawago village. We were there for the winter illumination lights up as part of a tour, which added to the whole experience.
