This was my favourite place to stay on the trip, even though it's worn and could use some updating. It's a family-run onsen and guesthouse, over fifty years old, and it felt like the heart of Japan during difficult times. The elderly parents still help with odd jobs while their daughter handles almost everything. Dinner was delicious Kaiseki, with seafood, vegetables, meat and sides, and there was plenty for a hungry skier. Breakfast followed by a morning onsen made a lovely start to the day. When the snow let up, I went for a walk through the peaceful Oshuku River Valley.

The onsen itself was nice, but I wasn't keen on the facilities inside. I don't use soap to shower. I booked two single rooms; my friend's had a toilet, but mine didn't. Dinner was good at 2500 yen, while breakfast was just so-so and didn't feel worth 1000 yen. The Minshuku is tucked behind a big hotel and was pretty hard to find the first time. The owner was very nice, and although she doesn't speak English, her son helped her.

The owners are really kind and do their best to make you feel at home. It's a traditional Japanese-style place beside a river, with a small but cozy onsen. A lovely spot to unwind and get away from Japan's big cities. Breakfast was fresh, very traditional, and delicious. I left feeling quite full.

My usual day-trip hot spring was closed for cleaning, so I came here instead. I knew the main part of Oshuku, but this place across the river felt like a hidden gem. There was plenty of water and lots of mineral deposits. They also had unscented body soap, which suited me as someone who loves nature, and I was very satisfied with the bath. The inn staff are sometimes away, so it's a good idea to call before heading over.

On a weekday afternoon in late October 25th, I stopped in for a quick bath that cost ¥440. I'd seen YouTube reviews praising the hot spring water and wanted to try it. I was concerned about getting there in my large SUV, but Google Maps guided me from the bypass, which helped a lot. The parking area fits up to six cars, and they kindly showed me where the bath was. The water was clear and came straight from the source. The dancing white flowers were beautiful. It was a refreshing, comfortable soak, with the temperature just right, neither too hot nor too lukewarm. I'd like to stay here next time.
