The rooms were quiet and clean, and although the furnishings were older, everything was looked after. Most of the beds were comfortable, though one had a few springs poking through. The family-run place is a nice, smaller option by Lake Toya, and the staff kindly stored our bags and called a taxi for us. We didn't try the food, and there’s a Kombini close by. Getting around was the downside for us. With a car, the location would be ideal. In winter, walking to the main town took 20-30 minutes, with icy stretches and parts where we felt close to the road. A bus from the local JR station stops outside, but it was infrequent and very crowded. We took taxis both ways, which cost ¥38,000. Good place to stay, and I’d recommend it if you have a car.

The meals are well worth booking, and the onsen was great. This pension sits right on Lake Toya’s shore, not far from Mt. Showa-Shinzan and the Mt. Usu ropeway. The mother and son who run it are lovely and do everything they can to make the stay pleasant. I’d be very happy to recommend it.

Madam Ohno even helped us carry our luggage when we arrived, which we really appreciated. The room isn’t new, but it has what you need for a freezing winter and plenty of space for one person or a couple. The 24-hour Onsen was a wonderful experience. Usuzen mountain is nearby, and I’d choose this place again on my next visit to Lake Toya.

I never got to stay here, but the owners helped me when I was stranded without mobile data. They used Google Translate to understand me and let me use their wifi so I could buy more. They saved me in the middle of nowhere. The location also has a lovely view of Lake Toya, with a konbini right next door.

We had dinner and breakfast included in our half-board stay at Pension Ohno, and both meals felt comforting and home-cooked. Dinner’s standout was the mutton stew, with tender, tasty meat and a satisfying balance to the meal. Breakfast brought grilled salmon cooked just right alongside traditional Japanese sides, a flavorful and nourishing start to the morning. The food, welcoming hospitality, and warm atmosphere made our stay feel special. Everything was handled beautifully.
