The room was spacious, with a small kitchen area, and the toilet was clean. Parking was easy, too. But the cleanliness elsewhere was bad enough that I wouldn’t recommend staying here. The futon had lots of hair on it, and there was hair in the indoor ceramic bath. I filled the bath and let my child play, then saw hair floating in the water. The microwave was dirty from previous use. I asked them to clean, and they did, but it still wasn’t thorough. I didn’t use the bath after that. One man welcomed us, but he didn’t seem to be around except when guests arrived or left. We chose the place thinking we could visit both Mount Aso and Takachiho Gorge from there. The location among the mountain ranges is ideal for that, and the room was a good size. We booked through Rakuten for ¥25,000 a night without meals, which seemed like a good price for Japan, but the cleanliness didn’t justify it. The TV was old and had no YouTube. They have Rakuten awards, though those were from 5-10 years ago, and I’m not sure whether they’re still valid. The town of Takamori is worth recommending, but this place isn’t. After stays in various Japanese cities, this was our worst ryokan experience.

The owners were so friendly, and this is a great place to stay when visiting Takachiho Gorge. It was extremely cold when I arrived, so a soak in the hot spring made me feel much better. The room was very clean.

The rice was delicious, and it’s a shame because the scenery is beautiful, the building is nice, and the people are nice. But I found no sense of hospitality at all, and the place was so full of hair that I couldn’t stop thinking about it. When I entered the room, I found 40-50 hairs in the trash can and countless more on the tatami. There was hair and grime in the bath and drain before I even got in. I found hair on the futon and pillow, and the sheets were stained and dirty. I keep wondering why nothing has improved despite all the reviews mentioning this. I came hoping they had fixed it, but the place didn’t feel clean at all. Aren’t sheets and pillowcases supposed to be changed each time? This wasn’t a case of hair getting stuck during a change. There was hair everywhere, and it drove me crazy. I had read the reviews, so I brought 4 or 5 bath towels and used those to get through the stay. People had said the futon was hard, but the lack of hygiene bothered me more. The food was made with ingredients I’d bought locally, and the pickles seemed to have just been transferred from the supermarket. Maybe that was because I chose a cheap plan, but I didn’t feel there was any care for the ingredients or any hospitality. As an innkeeper, I think they should do everything they can and should do. It’s such a shame.

I was very satisfied with the delicious food and spacious bath. The inn is a wooden building with separate rooms for up to three groups. I’d been looking for somewhere near Takamori Station for a visit to Heitate Shrine, and this worked well.

We spent four nights here with our child, and the staff were so kind to them that our first family trip became a lovely memory. Having the whole house to ourselves was a big help, since we didn’t have to worry as much about our child crying and disturbing other guests. The views of Aso from the room and dining area were beautiful, and we enjoyed both breakfast and dinner.
