We stayed in a large room with a private WC, a very comfortable bed, and a clear view of the woodlands. The auberge is at the end of a dead-end road by the forest, and we were glad to be near the cooling trees in the summer heat. It’s peaceful there, yet only a 15-minute drive from the old part of Takayama. The owners are both chefs with international experience, and their Japanese-Italian fusion cooking is outstanding. The owner knows how to choose wines to go with the delicious food, and the team is very friendly. The shared bathroom becomes private when you lock the door. It was spotless, with two showers and a hot tub/onsen.

On my second visit, the food, service, and atmosphere were still top-notch. The place doesn’t have all the extra amenities of conventional hotel chains, but I had the most restful sleep of my long trip in Japan. The owners probably wouldn’t remember me, since it’s a popular place, but I remember everyone. The older lady kindly drove me to the station last time. I felt emotional when I saw her this morning. She’s aged a little, but she’s still graceful and kind. Wishing the owners and their family good health, and hoping they keep running this excellent family auberge for years to come.

During my two weeks in Japan, this was the best place I stayed and the best experience I had. The food and wine were exceptional too. If you’re heading to Japan, you have to visit Takayama just to stay here!

We felt so relaxed and cozy here, and the hospitality and atmosphere were wonderful. The food was incredible, a real treat, with a 7,000 yen multi-course tasting menu. They also have a great pickup service, so getting to and from town wasn’t a worry. They handled my coeliac disease wonderfully and served lots of great gluten-free food.

This ended up being our favourite stay of the whole two-week trip in Japan. The owners were welcoming and flexible, and the calm, cozy atmosphere made the place feel special from beginning to end. Every meal seemed made with care, and the food was incredible, honestly better than anything we’ve had in London. I’m usually a bit sceptical when I see loads of glowing reviews, but every one here was spot on.
