The food was delicious, with many courses and cooking styles that made the meal interesting. A few dishes weren't to Western tastes, but that's part of travel. We loved the self-service meals, despite apparently seeing other reviewers give that style one star. The three large private onsens in the main area never had a wait. We didn't use the Riverside baths because we liked these so much, and they were hot by European standards. In February, the snow behind the beautiful buildings and interiors was stunning. The ryokan has a rustic, calming feel, and wandering its corridors on the way to the onsen will stay with me. All the staff were lovely and helpful, and they worked hard on their English to communicate. It felt like living in an ethereal dream. I can't wait to return.
