What made Mameya in Tamba Sasayama feel special was the sense of being cared for from the minute I arrived. Since it’s a single-building inn, it was peaceful throughout, and the hospitality was attentive without being intrusive. The concierge was wonderful, anticipating what I needed and helping discreetly in a very gentlemanly way. The building is a renovated nationally registered tangible cultural property. At night, the lit rock garden made the old and new feel as if they were quietly overlapping. The Watanomama pajamas were unexpectedly comfortable, and I honestly wanted to take them home with me (lol). I was also glad the women’s amenities were by DAMDAM. Dinner was peony hotpot at Chikamata, and it was far better than I expected. I’d say it’s a must-try in Tamba Sasayama. Breakfast was possibly the best I’ve had at an inn, personally. The grilled mackerel with black bean miso is a flavor I won’t forget. I definitely want to stay here again.

We had dinner at SEME, and it was a hit. The Italian food made with local ingredients was delicious, and the conversations with the chefs made for a treasured memory. Next time, I’d love to stay more than two nights. The garden, with Hiroshi Sugimoto's distinctive style, was stunning. We were told to check in early so we could enjoy how the space changes from daytime to evening and morning. The inn takes just one group per day, and our attendant looked after us from check-in through check-out with the care of a private butler. The renovated cultural property was impressive throughout, from the underfloor heating and room interiors to the architectural materials and design, all beyond what I’d expect even at a first-class inn.

The inner garden was lovely to look at from the Japanese cypress bathtub, and its rich scent helped me unwind as soon as I stepped in. The bedroom had a high ceiling, and I loved spending time looking up at the substantial beams. At night, the illuminated rock garden was especially peaceful. It changes character between morning and evening, and enjoying it after dark felt like a special privilege for guests. This rental inn is a Taisho-era Western-style building, carefully renovated to preserve its history and aesthetic. Original beams and glass windows give the whole place a dignified feel, while the modern plumbing and air conditioning make it comfortable without seeming dated. It’s an easygoing stay that still feels special. I’d love to return in another season.

Breakfast at Mamedo Cafe was delicious, with black beans and local vegetables. Renting the whole building and having it to yourself felt like a real luxury. The concierge was attentive, and I hope to come back with my family to make more memories. It was my first stay in a designated cultural property, and I found it both unusual and relaxing. I loved the old details, especially the illuminated rock garden and the historic beams above the bedroom. The underfloor heating in the hallways and tatami rooms kept things comfortable, a great fit with the retro atmosphere.

The rock garden was carpeted in Japanese cedar moss, and the nighttime lighting made it feel magical. Guests could enjoy it after dark or early in the morning, since it was off-limits during the neighboring cafe’s operating hours. Relaxing on a comfortable bed with a book and looking up at the bedroom’s heavy beams was blissful. The cypress scent from the Japanese cypress bath was soothing even in the dressing room, and I could unwind in the tub while looking into the inner garden. My daughter and I stayed in this beautifully renovated Taisho-era traditional Japanese house, a designated National Tangible Cultural Property. The new air conditioning and plumbing were easy to use, while the original lounge chandelier and bedroom ceiling kept a sense of history. I’d love to stay again.
