Guesthouse TAKAO

This was great value for the money, and I'd recommend staying here before starting the Kumano Kodo. The place was clean, organized, and well equipped, with showers, a kitchen, toilets, and rooms. I slept really well in the cozy, comfortable tatami room. It's very central, about a 10-minute walk from the train and bus station. I arrived a little late, but they were still waiting for me. The person who checked me in was so kind and gave me a Kumano Kodo souvenir and book stamp.

The quickest, easiest way I found was to head right after leaving Kii-Tanabe, go around the bicycle garage, then cross the station to the other side using the bridge. The house is tucked behind two other houses, so use your Google Maps to locate it.

The front desk guy was kind and helpful, and I loved having all the different coffee options. There wasn't a convenience store nearby, but the guesthouse sold some snacks on an honor system. I had the place to myself, and it was clean and tidy. I stayed in the traditional tatami room, though the steps up were a little steep. You can rent a bike, which is handy since Tanabe is easy to get around by bike. Comfy stay, close to the station.

One of the best hostels I've stayed at anywhere. It's small enough that it doesn't get busy or noisy, and the place is really clean. The signs make it easy to find. Thanks to Robert for the warm welcome and for teaching me how to bow!
