The rooms have a peaceful Japanese style, and the onsen baths use natural mineral water. Meals are kaiseki, made with fresh local ingredients, and the staff are attentive. Masugen Hotel sits among greenery and hot springs in scenic Wakayama Prefecture, with traditional hospitality and modern comforts. It could suit a quiet getaway or a visit to Wakayama’s cultural spots. One thing to keep in mind: there are more insects in spring and summer, and the rooms don’t have air conditioning.

The owner was delightful and cooked generous traditional Japanese breakfasts and dinners. The hotel onsen is small, but it was a nice way to relax in the evening. We stayed in early April and loved the beautiful area, the character of the town, the peaceful historic temple district, and the mountain and river walks. The cherry blossoms weren’t out yet, though we’d seen plenty in Kyoto and elsewhere. It was still one of the highlights of our trip. The Masugen Hotel gave us a traditional Japanese travelers lodge experience, with the comfort of AC heating. Highly recommended!

A lovely traditional inn with a hot bath. Sleeping on tatami with a futon was very comfortable. The owner was super friendly and spoke a little English, and she served a nice traditional Japanese breakfast. A great place to experience, and the nearby walking tracks are a must.

I went solo in June and found the old, long-established inn full of retro charm. The young staff were attentive and welcoming, which made me feel at ease. Since meals were served in a private room, I could take my time eating, and the portions were generous enough to leave me completely full.
