The snow kept us from using the outdoor tub on our terrace that day. My room was the only one among the five rooms with one. Still, the snowy landscape was lovely to watch from inside. We couldn't go walking around, but sitting quietly and taking in the scenery was a peaceful experience. I'd like to return in autumn for a few more days, when the leaves turn red, and see the places we missed because of the storm. The owner was born in Amakawa and clearly cares deeply about the land, which is regarded in Japan as a spiritual home and a sacred place of water dating back to 1350. He guided us to the historically important Daisho Shrine, explained its history, and showed us the proper way to worship. He also drove us at no charge to the well-known Dorogawa Onsen Spa Centre. Dinner featured local dishes, including grilled venison, which I'd never tried, salt-grilled trout that you can eat whole, and sweetfish rolls wrapped in fried noodles. Breakfast was mostly tofu made with sweet local mountain spring water.

The meals were included, and both dinner and breakfast felt carefully put together, with plenty of local ingredients. Our room looked onto a little creek, which made it very peaceful. It had traditional tatami flooring, and the owners laid out the futon beds for us in the evening. I was concerned because I have a bad back, but slept comfortably without any trouble. This was our favorite place during two weeks in Japan. The Ryokan felt authentic while still being easy for foreigners like us to enjoy. The owners were attentive and friendly from the moment we arrived, and the inn seems to be loved by visitors from Japan and abroad alike. If your room doesn't have a hot tub, you can book a slot in the shared tub for a private onsen soak. There are two covered parking spaces.

We didn't realize until we arrived that Tenkawa was such a special, spiritual place. The owner told us a bit about it and thoughtfully drove us to the shrine. The people were incredibly kind, the room was beautiful, the food was amazing, and the area was stunning. Of all our experiences on a three-week trip around Japan, this was easily the best. I'd wholeheartedly recommend Misenkan. Thank you!

After a long hike, we arrived to such thoughtful care from everyone. The staff know a great deal about the area's history and are happy to suggest walks around town and nearby, along with tips for visiting local businesses. The people were lovely, and the surroundings made for a truly relaxing stay that felt like being at home. The food was outstanding and all local. We had a wonderful time.

The family who hosted us were generous and kind, and took us to the Benzaiten-sha Shrine while sharing what they knew about local culture and nature. I loved our room, with its cedar lining and lovely scent, and we could hear the stream from inside. The bath felt special too, with an outdoor tub among the trees where we could relax to the sound of flowing water. The food was incredible, really fresh and made with local produce. They also accommodated our vegetarian request. We had a wonderful time at Misenkan, and I'd love to visit again. I highly recommend it.
