The family who run this place have clearly put love and passion into every detail. Their personal attention, kindness, and helpfulness were above and beyond, and it was one of the hardest places to leave when it was time to get back to reality. The rooms are simply but thoughtfully decorated, with plenty of peace and quiet. The outdoor hot spring bath is a perfect way to end the day. Meals go well beyond amazing in both presentation and quality. They can accommodate special dietary requests with advance notice. The location is convenient for canoeing, hiking, and general sightseeing. One unusual thing to know: you can't access the room or building during the day, roughly 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. That isn't a problem for a one-night stay or if you have things to do, and there's no shortage of activities around. The whole experience more than makes up for that minor inconvenience.

The hosts were kind enough to make us really good coffee at 6AM, and they suggested lovely spots like Sakurano taki, where trout jump over the waterfall. The place also has a beautiful outdoor Japanese bath and a cozy room with its own toilet. It’s near Lake Kussyaro, and dinner was delicious, with a nice selection of Hokkaido wines. I hope I can come back to Kussyarera soon.

We had the pension to ourselves, which made our last night of the family trip feel like a real treat. The snowy view from the bath was a lovely taste of Hokkaido winter, and the staff looked after us from arrival through the final morning. Dinner was a delicious mix of dishes from around the country, and waking up to the smell of fresh bread was a great start to the day. We also spotted a Japanese white-tailed tit at a place they recommended. It was a wonderful Hokkaido trip, and we’d definitely return.

The scent of freshly baked bread in the morning was so soothing, and the spring water felt silky in our hands. My daughters and I also loved the heartfelt French food and the swans calling nearby. With no television, those sounds stood out even more. The setting beside Lake Kussharo is beautiful, too. We finally managed our first visit in early October 2025, despite our busy schedules, and the guesthouse gave the three of us a memory for life. Thank you for making us feel so welcome.

The couple’s warm welcome helped us unwind from everyday tiredness, and this became the most memorable place we stayed during our 8-day Hokkaido trip. Best of all, our 10-year-old, who usually hates vegetables, enjoyed most of the dishes. She’d never shown interest in vegetable dishes before, even when we encouraged her to try them, and she got to taste a variety of foods along the way. My husband and I are so happy to see her growing. We’d love to visit again. Thank you very much.
