Oyado Kinkiyu Bettei SUIKAZURA

The restaurant was the highlight of our two-week Hokkaido trip. Both dinner and breakfast were the best we had, with varied, high-quality Japanese food. Bravo! We stayed in a traditional room with tatami and futons. I didn’t love the room because it could use some renewal, though the lounge and bar were very pleasant and had been beautifully updated. It’s a lovely traditional hotel. We didn’t use the onsen, which I imagine is nice too.

The food was great, but I wouldn’t stay here again. Some of the counter staff were unfriendly, and the bed frame had a hard-to-see sharp corner. My senior parents hit their legs on it several times. We would have preferred sleeping on the floor without that hard wooden frame. The hot springs were just okay.

The dinner and breakfast buffets were outstanding. We also loved the lounge, which seemed to be designed by a master architect. It looks out over the thermal stream, and the drinks are free-flowing. Highly recommended.

Dinner was quite good, but I wouldn’t stay here again, even for just one night. The Rakuten photos made the place look traditional and fairly clean; the room didn’t feel clean when we arrived, and my skin got itchy. The bed frame moved easily and the mattress was only a very thin layer. The chair beside the bed looked as though it hadn’t been cleaned in ten years. We asked if we could pay extra to move to another room, but its mattress was still very thin. I’d tell people to read the reviews carefully before booking.
