We arrived at 4:30 pm and were greeted warmly by guest relations. After check-in, someone walked us through the facilities, including the onsen, and then showed us to our room and gave us another thoughtful introduction. The room felt calm and understated, with tatami flooring, a low wooden table, and big windows looking out toward the sea. The natural light and simple traditional decor made it comfortable without feeling overdone. Our Nakai-san served dinner in the room, explaining the dishes with quiet care. The Koyo Gozen kaiseki menu began with local burdock potage, then seared sea bream with white sesame oil and sea salt. We also had bonito sushi with red vinegar and egg yolk vinegar. The seasonal platter included local vegetables, conger eel wrapped in a dragon-eye style, and tomato and shrimp pie with a light miso glaze. The sashimi course was a highlight: live abalone from Toba, red snapper, golden eye snapper, and local squid, with a savory shrimp miso sauce. Eating at the low table in such quiet surroundings made the meal feel like part of the ryokan stay, slow and relaxing. After dinner, the table was cleared and futons were laid out on the tatami, turning the room into a sleeping space. A peaceful, intimate stay with a lot of traditional Japanese hospitality that stayed with us after checkout.

The outdoor onsen and kaiseki meals were wonderful, and our room had great views. There’s also an espresso bar and a handy souvenir shop inside. We were moved from a standard Japanese room to a larger one when we arrived, possibly because it was shoulder season. The staff were very friendly, and some spoke English. They arranged a shuttle to Toba station for our sightseeing plans. When one plan fell through, they helped book a restaurant at the last minute and gave the taxi driver clear directions for us. Thanks, Yoshi-san. We didn’t see many other American visitors, but we felt very welcome and well looked after. The only thing we didn’t love was that the futons felt a bit hard, though we may just be unaccustomed to sleeping on them.

We had a lovely family stay, with a beautiful setting, welcoming staff, and great service. Both dinner and breakfast were delicious. We’d be happy to come back. Thanks for taking such good care of us!

The onsen looks out over the ocean, and I could see fish jumping from the water during the day. Dinner was served in our room, with a personal assistant explaining each dish. The staff really made the visit special. Gura picked us up at the station and was friendly and smiling throughout. Thanks, Gura. There’s a shuttle to a few island attractions, including dolphin island, pearl island, and the aquarium. We had a great time and met the driver at toba station each time, so we didn’t have to walk in the heat. The hotel is a classic Japanese-style place about three minutes from Toba station. My wife and I stayed for the summer festival, and the 45 minutes of fireworks were amazing. I’d come back. Most staff speak a little English, but learning some Japanese beforehand made my stay even better.

The service was top-notch, and they’d clearly put a lot of effort into the decor. The walkway to the onsen and elevator was lined with beautiful orchids.
