The food is the best part for the price. The sashimi was delicious, the beef was nice, and all the sides were good, so you definitely won’t leave hungry. Breakfast was better than the usual, with delicious marinated fish and plenty of rice, though otherwise it was a standard Japanese breakfast. Our room had plenty of space for four and was clean, without feeling especially dated, but there were the usual scratches and scrapes on the walls and furniture. The air-conditioning had mold, and its fan seemed broken. The humidifier filters were filthy, so we had to clean them before using it. The futon was the typical old style, basically like sleeping on the floor. I’ve stayed in other ryokan with more foam, which was much better, so this won’t suit you if you need support while sleeping. There was a good-sized fridge and a small bath and shower in the room, though the public bath was included and the water temperature was very nice. The indoor section is medium to small, and the outdoor section isn’t very good. Service was okay. In my opinion, most of the Japanese attendants seemed a bit too informal, while the non-Japanese attendants were fantastic. Our first night didn’t get off to a great start because we were told at check-in that one of our toddler twins wouldn’t get a yukata, towels, or anything at all since we hadn’t chosen the futon and meal option for them. We’d paid around ¥5000 just for the privilege of bringing our child. That was baffling, especially after an Onsen in Gero where we’d made the same arrangement and everyone got towels and yukatas regardless of their plan. At most ryokans I’ve stayed in, coffee and similar amenities are complimentary as part of the hospitality. Here, coffee costs ¥300 for what’s essentially a Nespresso, so nobody in their right mind would buy it. It comes across as penny pinching. There’s not much in the surrounding area beyond a beach, so it’s not a great place to explore. It’s a good hotel that could do more, but I feel it’s limited by customer and cost.
