Kaigetsu is in a fantastic spot, a short walk from Toba station, Toba Castle, Mikimoto Pearl Island, Irako Seihaku's house, and the Prof. Kadono monument at the Toba Tourist centre. Restaurants and shops are nearby too. At checkout, obachan gave us onigiri, which we ate on a bench in Shiroyama Park overlooking the sea and islands. Ships and trains passed by, with the Toba castle ruins behind us. Toba really is amazing. We left on the Mijumaru Liner with heavy hearts and a promise to return, touched by the warmth of Japanese countryside hospitality. The ryokan has been run by Kiku Ezaki and her family since 1887. Kiku is an Ama diver known in Toba, and she also runs Kaito Yumin club beside the ryokan, an ecotourism company offering activities like sea kayaking and advocating for ama divers. The outdoor seating and tanuki statute made it easy to spot, even at night. Inside, the lobby felt like someone's living room, with tidy slippers and shoes in the genkan, comfortable sofas, bookshelves, and warm wood tones. Kiku's mum checked us in and was very friendly. She mentioned other Malaysian guests had arrived that day too, which surprised us. After our tiny Osaka hotel, this room felt spacious, with a tea area, two double beds, a modern toilet and bath, and a lovely sea view. Tatami mats throughout made it comfortable to lie down after a long day exploring Ise Jingu. Thank you for the meal! Grandma, stay well

The inn’s location is excellent, about five minutes from the local train station and a couple of tourist spots. My room was clean, everything worked, and I also ordered breakfast on my final day, which was delicious. The facilities were more than adequate for me, as long as you’re not fussy about wear and tear. Kaigetsu was founded in the Meiji era, according to its website, and the place does feel old and a little worn. But it has a quaint atmosphere and a homely, family-run character. It felt more like staying at my grandmother’s house than at a hotel, and it’s a nice way to experience a traditional Japanese inn and its hospitality. A little Japanese would also help you talk with the landlady and locals. The only staff member I noticed during my stay was the elderly landlady. She was incredibly kind and friendly, greeting and chatting with guests as they came and went. I wasn’t sure whether she had help, so I tried to leave my room as tidy as I could. When I checked out, she gave me onigiri; I ate it on the train to Nagoya, and it was delicious. I’d stay at Kaigetsu again if I return to Mie prefecture, and I hope the old landlady has a long, happy life.

It almost seemed too good to be true. On our trip, we found beautiful, traditional surroundings, spacious and comfortable rooms, a lovely bath, a traditional breakfast, and staff who were so kind. The atmosphere really surprised us.

The women running the inn are hardworking and doing a good job, even though the place looks dated. My room was large and clean, with a modern toilet. It felt like the kind of stay a Ryokan should offer, so I’d recommend it. They weren’t serving meals on the night I visited, which was a shame, but I went out along the street and found some very fresh food.

Kaigetsu is a lovely place, and the women working there were kind and helpful. They don’t speak English, but their hospitality made guests feel comfortable. Ryokans aren’t supposed to be fancy with lots of amenities, so if you want a traditional local Japanese inn with a great breakfast and workers who show Omotenashi, this one fits. Thank you for the onigiri, auntie 😊 It was delicious!
