Awa Kanko Hotel

We had some nice walks nearby, both in the quiet morning and later when the city was lively. The boardwalk is worth a stroll for the river views, and there are plenty of places to eat and drink. Parking through the front desk was just 500 yen per night, and getting the Japan Times in English each morning was a nice touch. The room was a decent size, the buffet breakfast was good, and it had lots of fresh local fruit and vegetables. The hotel is very convenient, right opposite Tokushima JR train station. Bathroom soap, body wash, shampoo, and conditioner came in reusable containers, and the towels were good quality and large enough to wrap around. There were some things that felt wasteful. The room was too cold for me even with the A/C on its lowest setting, and we couldn't open the windows. The fridge and A/C were already running when we arrived, even though the room cooled quickly once we came in. They also left plastic water bottles, though the kettle and cups by the sink suggested the tap water was fine, and it tasted good. A chilled refillable bottle, with a filter in the room or hallway, would have felt like better hospitality and cut down on waste. We drink a lot of water in summer. The sofa bed was painfully uncomfortable and noisy. I took the mattress out and slept on the floor instead, which was fine. There were three of us, and the double beds were too small for two Western adults, so we were glad to have three beds.

The place feels a bit dated, but it was clean and comfortable, and the staff were very friendly. Parking was convenient, the location was very good, and it was good value for the money.

The room was spacious, with enough toiletries, coffee capsules and a machine, and a smartphone to use during the stay. Breakfast was very good and everything was clean. Service was below par, though. They were understaffed and we had to take our own luggage to the room.

A great place to stay, with everything you need in the room, including wifi and stuff. 👌✌
