I had a fun, interesting stay at Hostel Adonis. The staff member who welcomed me was pleasant and very friendly. There’s also a bright separate room for eating or packing your luggage, so you don’t disturb people who are asleep. The hostel is in a quiet, slightly upmarket neighborhood, with several designer furniture shops nearby. The building has some thoughtful design details, including steel doors and large glass panels on the front. It felt very Japanese to me, though most people might not notice those details unless they work in the industry.

At $65 a night, this didn’t feel worth the cost. Over my two nights, the bins weren’t emptied and the bathrooms got the same lack of attention. The showers were open and right beside the bunks, so the noise made for restless sleep. They did create some fun, too. There’s a convenient Thai restaurant on the ground floor, and the station is a ten-minute walk away. Still, I won’t spend this much to stay here again. I’d look for a cheaper hotel, or downtown Ikebukuro Royal at the same price, which has a private room and a ‘gay’ bathhouse. Thanks for having me, though.

The two young staff members really made this place for me. The man checking guests in was kind, welcoming and efficient, and the cleaner was attentive and friendly. The hostel was thoroughly cleaned each day, and the whole atmosphere felt inclusive. I stayed on the second floor, which is gay-friendly, and would recommend asking for that floor if that appeals to you. This is a no-frills hostel, not a luxury hotel, so set your expectations accordingly. My dorm had five bunk beds, ten beds in total. The beds were basic, with thin mattresses and a cover serving as the sheet, but comfortable enough for a night’s sleep. Outside the dorm were two urinals and one seated toilet. The shared shower room had two showerheads, and each one shut off every 40 seconds, which takes some getting used to. People shower at all hours, so it can be noisy. I didn’t mind the bustle, but light sleepers might want earplugs. You need to download the app “Sesame, Open Sesame” to enter. It’s a slightly unusual setup, but worked smoothly once I had it installed. The hostel is clean, friendly and convenient. I loved my stay and would happily return to Tokyo and stay here again.

Since the owner and staff changed, prices have shot up. Cleaning isn’t up to standard and the management feels sloppy. Please bring things back to how they were as soon as you can.

I was there for a full week and came away feeling only so-so about it. The price was good, and the owner was nice, but there wasn’t really anywhere to relax except your bed. I hadn’t even been told there was a gym. The rest of the third-floor bathroom was clean, but there were clumps of hair in the sink. I also couldn’t stand that floor’s shower faucet: you had to keep pressing it to get water, and it shut off every 40 seconds. Awful for showering. I’m not sure the sheets were changed between guests. I saw someone leave, then a worker take the sheets but not the mattress covers. When I came back that evening, the covers looked like the same ones, with a fresh top sheet and towel on top. Maybe the covers are the same color even when changed, but I was really itchy in bed and wondered about it.
