We spent 10 days here, and having the conveniences of a temporary home was great. You can cook and wash and dry your clothes, and the place is right next to a station on the pink Oedo line. The entrance literally says 'your second home.' The room was small for four of us, two adults and two teens, and we barely fit. The only private areas were the separate toilet and bath. There’s no service staff standing by, either. You talk to someone on a video call in the lobby, so you can’t get in-person help booking a restaurant or venue that only takes reservations in Japanese. As with other serviced apartments, there’s no daily housekeeping. In Japan you’re expected to sort your trash and clean your living space as you would at home.

We were left wondering about the heating and cooling units. Tokyo was cool enough that we wanted heat in the evenings, but each time we switched on the standalone unit, both of us felt congested. I don’t know how often they’re serviced or cleaned, but it felt as though allergens might be getting circulated. The luggage setup added stress on our last day. Check-out is at 10 AM, an hour earlier than the usual 11 AM at most hotels in Japan. There’s a cabinet by the front doors for bags, far from the desk and unmonitored. It has locks, but staff told us they no longer work. Tokyo is generally very safe, but this felt unnecessarily risky. The alternative is taking bags to Ueno station for a coin locker, which can fill up early. We stayed six nights at Ueno Shin-Okachimachi after a good visit last year to the Gyon location in Kyoto. The unit was clean, digital check-in and check-out went smoothly, and the on-site staff were very helpful. It’s clearly a renovated apartment building in a residential area, so nights are quiet, but dining options are limited, especially on Sunday and Monday when people are usually eating at home. Shin-Okachimachi station is right there, with the Oedo and Tsukuba Express lines. Most tourist areas beyond Asakusa aren’t directly on those lines, so you’ll need to walk about 15 minutes to Ueno station or make transfers.

Getting around was easy from here, with the Oedo Line nearby and Sukiya, 7-Eleven, and FamilyMart close by. We never had to wait for the elevator, and we felt safe throughout the stay. Communication with the hotel admin over the LINE app was easy, and they were responsive and helpful. There were three adults and one infant in our group, and the room worked well for us. We chose two beds on the floor, a sofa bed, and a futon. There was enough space to open our luggage, hang winter clothes in a corner, and use the futon storage area temporarily for shopping. The room was clean and had what we needed, including drying racks, extra blankets and pillows, a microwave, a refrigerator, and a small kitchen. Shower water gave us no trouble. We had a really pleasant stay at Hotel Minn Ueno Shin-Okachimachi, especially suited to a family or group looking for a clean, spacious, convenient place in Ueno.

The noise from above was disruptive, with loud footsteps and movement clearly audible in our room. The futons were filthy, too, though the room itself was adequate. The first impression came from check-in. I hadn’t received the required code by email, so the man at the front desk had to find our booking information himself. He seemed visibly annoyed to help, even though the process was self-serve, and handled it with a poor attitude. When I asked him to repeat the code so I could enter it accurately, he mumbled something in Japanese. It felt dismissive and unprofessional, and left me hesitant about the stay. The other front desk staff were kind, courteous, and helpful, which I appreciated.

We came for one night to recover from a long flight before moving on. We picked the place based on decent reviews, meaning basically not dirty, along with the price and location. It felt like a typical apartment rental. The room seemed clean and had what we needed, and we were surprised to find a washer/dryer combo, which helped since we didn’t have all our luggage. There’s a conbini a short walk away. Jet lag had me in the kitchen in the middle of the night, and it came in handy for a late meal with our 1 year old. There were two twin mattresses on the tatami mat, plus futons in the closet that we didn’t try, so I can’t comment on those. A low table and 4x seat cushions were on the mat. The window let in a lot of light at night and had a sheer curtain. Maybe there was a blackout curtain I didn’t have the energy to look for. The room also echoed loudly. Our toddler’s walking and running sounded really loud, and I worried about waking the neighbors, so I had to work hard to keep him calm. It wouldn’t have been an issue if we weren’t jet lagged and worried about complaints. We’d specified 2 adults and 1 toddler but got only two bath towels. I don’t know if they’d have given us another if we asked, and we didn’t have the energy to try. Check-in involved connecting to their WiFi, which had a weak signal in the lobby, scanning the QR, and filling out information.
