Sutton Place Hotel Ueno

The room was acceptable for two people, and getting to Ueno station and the Keisei Liner was convenient. That easy access was why my husband and I picked this hotel. The location is great and straightforward to reach. The room and towels smelled a bit stuffy, not like detergent or fabric softener. The coin laundry didn’t really work for us: we paid extra for the dryer and the clothes still weren’t dry, so we had to use an outside laundromat to get them properly dried. I’d recommend the hotel for its location, if nothing else.

There’s good food around, and the hotel is in a good location, though it was a little confusing to find. The receptionist was very kind and had a room ready even though I arrived a bit early, just after 1 pm. It has the right amenities for a short stay, including coin laundry. The room was small but clean and comfortable. Thanks for the stay!

Housekeeping is something you have to arrange a day ahead. You also carry your own rubbish and used towels to the second floor, then collect fresh towels from the third. That did give us some privacy, but for what we paid, I expected more service. The staff were pleasant, and the location was handy. Still, the cleaning and upkeep need attention. Our bathroom had obvious black mildew across the walls, ceiling, and shower grout, and the curtain smelled musty. One flap from the heater/AC ceiling unit fell out overnight. The rooms also have that musty smell other guests mention. Noise carries too, which may come with an older building beside a road, but light sleepers could have a hard time.

The help I got on the night of December 6th was genuinely caring. I wish that attentiveness had been more consistent, since staff seemed busy and weren't always proactive with guests. The bigger concern was the room: there was mold on the bathroom walls and shower curtain, plus dust in the gaps between the wooden floorboards. For a stay costing over 1,000 HKD a night, that level of cleanliness and the need to tidy up or ask for toilet paper each day were disappointing. The front desk is on the third floor, accessible to anyone taking the elevator, which left me uneasy about guest security and privacy. I appreciate the eco-friendly approach, but guests should be able to choose daily cleaning, perhaps with a simple preference tag, while keeping costs in mind. Tokyo has many accommodation options for location and room size at this price. I hope this wasn't the usual standard at Sutton Place Hotel, because I'd be glad to return if things improve. I stayed from December 3rd to December 9th. Thanks for considering the feedback.
