The staff were polite and helped me figure out the microwave, which is why I can give this two stars instead of one. I’ll probably avoid staying at a Toyoko Inn again. I usually book them as a practical stop, and this time I chose one in a hurry because I had to come to Tokyo at short notice for an event and needed one of the more affordable options. Getting to Ikebukuro station was easy, just a short walk. The neighborhood felt seedy at night, though, with love hotels around and an unpleasant atmosphere. The hotel itself was old, and the facilities showed it, but that wasn’t my main concern. My room didn’t feel clean at all. I found long hair in the bathroom and beside the mugs, which was disgusting. I normally carry wipes and sanitiser, and I ended up using them a lot here. The room layout was awkward, and the soundproofing was poor. I could hear loud guests across from me and someone running water in another bathroom. I kept the AC on to cover up the noise.

The room and staff were very good, and the cleaning team did a great job. It was good value for money, and I’d stay again. I’ve stayed in this area before and find it convenient, with shops nearby and an easy walk to the train station.

The breakfast changes regularly, which helps keep it fresh, and the UCC coffee is consistently good. Our room was larger because it was by the elevator, but we were surprised that we didn’t hear any elevator noise. The hotel has luggage storage and lockers, though the larger spaces tend to fill up early, so plan ahead if you need one. The place feels much like other Toyoko Inns: older, but well kept.

The location is handy for restaurants and shopping, and the staff are friendly and speak a little English. The rooms are tiny, but everything is arranged well. Breakfast was so crowded that I left and bought food elsewhere. Check-out at 10 a.m. is a hassle, though you can leave your bags in the lobby. Smoking rooms are available. Thank you from Singapore ❤️
