Towadako Backpackers

It's a really nice, spacious hostel with private parking and a great location. The lake is a short walk away, and Oirase Gorge is close enough for a day walking along the river. They also include breakfast for free. I'd recommend it and would definitely return.

I went solo in mid-May, and there weren't really any other backpackers around, so I'm not sure it's the best place to meet fellow hikers. Still, it's close to the lake and there's a nice road nearby for running or biking. The family who runs the hotel is very sweet, the bed was cozy, the food was good, and the central hall felt homely. Buses out don't come often, so the dad offered to drive me to Hirosaki for a very reasonable price. Thanks!

The staff were friendly, and the hostel was clean and quiet. The building's a bit old, but the location is handy at the end of the main street. The kitchen is free to use, and they provide a simple breakfast at no charge.

The house itself is amazing, though driving there at night was scary because it's right in the middle of a forest. The hostel is run by a very nice grandma. Check-in is usually until 9pm, but I called to say I couldn't arrive before 11pm and she said it was no problem. She left the keys out before going to bed, so I picked them up and went to sleep. Breakfast was American style, with bread, butter, jam, milk, and cereal. At 9:45 she told me she was heading to work, but didn't ask me to leave. I handed back my key and left.
