The setting beside beautiful Towdako lake is fantastic, but our late June half-board stay booked through a major reservation platform was truly horrible. For a hotel rated three stars, the meals were below average at best. At checkout, the woman at the front desk insisted we pay in cash. Only afterward did we notice a Japanese sign saying credit cards were welcome. I messaged the platform’s customer service to complain and still haven’t heard back, and I can’t post a review of the hotel there. I learned not to rely only on hotel-booking-site reviews, since those sites have a conflict of interest.

The meals looked elaborate, but tasted bland. The hotel itself is close to a beautiful lakeside, though the building is quite old and has no elevator.

We chose the half-board option and looked forward to every meal. The food was wonderful, and the location is fantastic too. What I’ll remember most about Lake Towada, though, is the service. The older people who seem to run the hotel were extremely attentive and personal, and really did their best to make us comfortable. They made it feel like home.

The place looks a bit old, but it was clean throughout. It’s right on Lake Towada, with a hot bath (onsen), and the staff were really nice and did their best to accommodate us. Dinner and breakfast were both great, ryokan style.
