Guesthouse Iwase

The owner of guesthouse Iwase was a friendly gentleman and made the stay an absolute delight. Iwase itself has lovely streets and views, but there isn’t much nearby to do or shop for, especially in bad weather. The drinks guests can help themselves to were excellent, though the breakfast unfortunately didn’t agree with me. Our traditional twin room looked private, but sound carried through it. One evening I came back with a headache while people were being loud in the living room, and realized the wall above the paper doors is completely open. It felt like sharing their room. That may be fine for a guesthouse, but not if you expect privacy.

The host’s thoughtfulness stood out: although we gave him about an hour’s arrival window, he was already waiting at the neighborhood entrance to guide us to the house. He also gave us two free railway tickets valid for foreign travelers. Guesthouse Iwase is a six-minute walk from the railway station, and the traditional home was clean and well maintained. Little touches like a child’s toilet seat, which helped after we lost ours on the trip, and a water station were appreciated. We chose futons for the one-time experience. They were firmer than I’m used to, but that comes with sleeping traditionally. From Google reviews, I think the guesthouse also has Western-style beds. The walls are thin, so noise travels easily, which could be stressful with a baby or toddler. There are strict rules too: no food or drink in rooms, and the shared living room is only open at set times. Towels cost 200 yen, but were very plush. At 9,700 yen a night, it was an affordable, peaceful stay with a kind, attentive host. I’d recommend it for a traditional Japanese guesthouse visit if you’re prepared for the house rules and limited sound insulation.

The manager was lovely and helped me plan what to do in Toyama city. They offer a few services, including bike rental. I had a great stay and highly recommend the guest house. I’ll stay here again when I’m next in Toyama.
