I stayed here January 25-26 and didn’t have a great experience. Getting around with large luggage was difficult because there’s no lift or help carrying bags on the stairs. At check-in, nobody explained the ryokan’s private onsen or the nearby public onsens. Also, the advertised mountain view was misleading, and the shuttle only runs from the station to the ryokan, not back to the station. The room’s air conditioning kept switching on and off, which was disruptive. Staff entered our locked room twice while my friend and I were out, once at breakfast and once to visit a public onsen. The most upsetting time was after breakfast, when we returned around 9 am hoping to rest before checkout and found that our futons had been taken without asking. The meal didn’t match the high praise I’d seen from other guests. My friend and I were surprised by the quality. There was a variety of dishes, but they may not suit everyone. At dinner, rice came after we’d finished the soup, and it was cold. The meal also felt rushed, with staff clearing each plate as soon as I finished it, which made it uncomfortable.

The staff were lovely and explained the customs and meal happily. I’d recommend Tsukimotoya to anyone looking for a good Kinosaki stay. It cost a bit less than the other ryokans in town, so I wondered if it might be budget or poorly maintained, but it turned out to be wonderful.

We got engaged during one of our days in Kinosaki Onsen, and Tsukimotoya Ryokan was a wonderful place to celebrate that. Staff were kind and patient as we found our way around. The ryokan was peaceful and beautiful in its traditional style, and the included traditional breakfast and dinner were delicious. A phenomenal stay.

Everything was great, though dinner and breakfast were too early for us. The access also closes at 23:30, which felt too early to me.

The meals were a real plus. I had the half-board plan and enjoyed everything I ate. Check-in and checkout were smooth, and the owner and all the staff were welcoming and helpful whenever I needed support. My room was clean and a perfect size, quite large compared with a typical big-city hotel and even much bigger than a ryokan I’d visited in Kusatsu Onsen. The facilities covered my needs, though there was only one hair dryer in the ryokan’s own onsen. It’s walkable from Kinosaki Station. It isn’t right by the station, but it’s among the seven onsens, which I really enjoyed visiting. I wish I could come back to Kinosaki.
