There wasn’t a single chair in the maisonette, either upstairs or downstairs, despite what the booking site showed. The room also looked worse than the photos other reviewers had shared. Dinner buffet quality was average.

The river view from my sixth-floor room and the snowy scenery were among the highlights of my trip. Kinosaki Onsen is beautiful, and the baths are excellent. The room itself was clean, and the restaurant, shop, and housekeeping staff were consistently helpful and friendly. The building feels heavily used and worn rather than simply old. There were black fingerprints high on the ceiling, and some things were broken or under construction. The air conditioning was extremely loud, but needed because of the cold. Opening the window brought kitchen exhaust fumes into the room. The TV was tiny for its distance from the bed. I’d requested a room far from the elevator when booking in summer 2025, but that was ignored. Only one receptionist spoke very good English, and she wasn’t there when I checked out. The remaining reception staff had such limited English that effective communication was very difficult. They sometimes tried translation apps, but seemed not to have been trained to work with Western guests. The worst part was leaving. I asked reception to call a taxi to the station and was told it would come in 30 minutes. After 35 minutes, there was still no taxi. It took another five minutes for staff to understand what I was asking, and then the employee I’d asked to arrange the car said I had canceled the request. I hadn’t. I was left wondering how I was supposed to get to the station. The hotel driveway hadn’t been cleared of snow, even though guests were leaving at the same time, so I had to walk through snow and slush with my luggage. Passing cars splashed dirty water and mud over me until I was soaked and filthy. At the station I had to dig through my suitcase for dry clothes and shoes with 50 people watching. When I said I still needed a ride, the response was a casual “Oh sorry” and a stereotypical Japan smile. There was no real apology, help, bow, or accountability, just staff chatting with a colleague about me. The final moments of a trip shape the impression people remember, and this departure was unacceptable. I expect the usual generic reply about discussing it internally and improving next time, phrases that appear under countless reviews. This hotel has been at this location since 1969, and the current operator has run it since 2012. That’s plenty of time to learn how to treat guests. This was a serious service failure, not a beginner’s mistake.

For the price, this place offers good value: half-board meals, a spacious room, free parking, and a solid onsen with steam and dry saunas plus indoor and outdoor baths. Guests can also help themselves to free coffee, tea, beer, and sake on the first floor from late afternoon. It’s about a 5-7 minute drive from central Kinosaki town. The two elevators are tiny for a hotel this size, and cooking smells can drift into the rooms.

The rooms are big, the food is good, and the lounge service is nice. Having Tabibijin horse oil products in the bathhouse makes it feel like the ryokan takes its onsen seriously. My only complaints are that the toilet could be a little larger and the walk to Main Street can feel long, especially in winter.

There’s a free bus into town if you’d rather not walk, and the hotel has good-sized rooms. Breakfast and dinner are buffet meals, and the onsen was very good. Free drinks are available from 14:00-22:00, including beer and sake. There’s no shower in the room, which didn’t feel necessary at an onsen hotel, though there is a toilet and sink.
