Our room was beautiful and very clean, with a pleasant street view from the balcony. The ryokan is a little away from the central area, so reaching the other onsens takes some walking. Kinosaki is walkable, though, and the scenery made the walk enjoyable. We were welcomed, but there was a slightly condescending edge to the interaction that I can’t quite explain. I wondered if speaking in English, which is a foreign language, made things feel awkward. That was the impression I got at check-in. Aside from that, everything was perfect, and the owner’s lovely mother showed us how to wear the yukata. Breakfast was delicious, served western style with toast and salad. The dining space was open and wonderfully bright, with full glass windows, and the service was efficient. We had Japanese friends over for drinks that evening, and they stayed past the welcome time. The owner reminded us through the door. I’m sorry about that. We may have been noisy while laughing and talking, and I didn’t see the message through the booking site asking our friends to leave the room. We weren’t told to take our empty sake bottles with us at checkout, though apparently we were meant to. The owner didn’t seem happy about it, so keep that in mind. Apart from the bottles and used cups, I think we left the room fairly neat and clean. There was another bit of snark when we checked out. I’m not sure what caused it, and that’s why I’m giving four stars. It’s a really nice place, but may suit people who are willing to keep everything spotless and give it a 10-star rating.

We spent two nights at Tsuchiya Ryokan and found it beautifully kept and spotless. It’s family run, with a more modern, stylish feel than many traditional ryokans we’ve stayed in. The staff speak English, and Western-bed rooms are available, though we chose tatami and were happy with it. Breakfast was simple and Western style, just what we appreciated. They also serve a lovely dinner, but it wasn’t available when we booked because it was busy season. We went to a local udon place, Chikara Mochi, instead, and it was excellent. We visited all six public onsens that were open during our stay. Kinosaki Onsen has seven, but one was closed. Here’s how we’d rank the ones we tried: 1) Kouno-yu was our favorite. It has indoor and outdoor baths, so you can switch between them, and the temperature was more comfortable than at many other onsens. 2) Goshono-yu has a beautiful outdoor bath and waterfall. There’s no indoor bath, but the lovely setting more than makes up for it. 3) Mandara-yu is one of the smallest. The indoor bath is tiny and extremely hot, and its two outdoor baths each fit one person. It’s best when uncrowded, ideally below about 20% capacity. You can check live capacity at the front desk or on the Kinosaki Onsen website. 4) Ichino-yu has both indoor and outdoor baths. The outdoor area is cave themed, though it seems more like a theme park decoration than a real cave. Its outdoor baths aren’t as impressive as those at Kouno-yu or Goshono-yu, but it’s still nice to have both options. 5) Yanagi-yu is simple and spacious, with just one indoor bath. It feels more like a regular public bath (sento) than a traditional onsen. 6) Jizo-yu is in one of the prettiest wooden buildings, but the baths are very small. There’s only one small indoor bath, and it was the hottest of all. My wife couldn’t get in because of the temperature. We’d probably have ranked it higher for the architecture if it had been cooler. Tsuchiya Ryokan made for a great stay, and Kinosaki Onsen is well worth a visit if you like moving between onsens in a quiet, traditional setting. Three nights would be ideal.

We spent three nights here, which gave us time to see how much Kinosaki Onsen has to offer. There are seven public hot springs, all with their own character, along with shops, scenic paths, the ropeway, creek-side walks, and memorable food. I’d recommend allowing 2-3 nights. The ryokan is well placed, just steps from several public baths, with the furthest about 15 min away, and the ropeway nearby. Guests get yukata and geta, and that made onsen-hopping around town feel especially natural. The traditional rooms were spotless, comfortable, and peaceful, with tatami and views over the creek and quiet backstreets. The futon was set up while we were out. There are private onsen baths at Tsuchiya Ryokan too, clean and serene, and lovely for relaxing late at night or early in the morning. Luggage storage before check-in and after checkout helped us sightsee without stress. Kazuki and his mother made the hospitality feel personal. Kazuki greeted us on arrival, helped with travel logistics, and gave recommendations tailored to us. His English was excellent, and he explained local customs clearly, which made things smooth for international guests. His mother was warm and attentive, always ready to help or brighten the day with a small gesture or smile. The rest of the staff also helped make every moment special. Tsuchiya Ryokan is a family run place that captures the warmth of Japanese hospitality. It became a highlight of our visit, and I’d recommend it to anyone coming to the region.

The village around this ryokan is incredibly charming, and the place itself was beautiful, clean, and peaceful. The people made the stay especially memorable. Staff were professional and attentive, and took care of us in every way. The food was outstanding, a full 10 out of 10. They even offered us a ride to and from the train station without being asked. That kind of kindness and hospitality feels rare these days. If you want a relaxing, authentic Japanese experience, I’d recommend it 100%.

The owner welcomed us and explained how to use the kimono set. We stayed one night at Tsuchiya Ryokan and had a great time. It’s family owned and operated, and after visiting a few onsen towns in Japan, I’d say this was one of the most pleasant stays and service experiences we’ve had. I hadn’t realized before how much a family-run ryokan could matter. The ryokan may be a little far from the station, but there’s a pickup shuttle. Its location turned out to be close to three onsens, especially madara no yu, just a few steps from Tsuchiyaa. The Kinosaki ropeway was only a three-minute walk away. We also received some merch that will always remind us of our stay at Tsuchiya - Kinosaki.
