The meals were a lovely surprise: the three young staff members, who also cook, were warm and kind, and they accommodated my vegetarian diet. Dinner and breakfast were carefully made, far beyond what I’d expect from a school canteen, and the Niigata rice was especially good. Hearing the school song at breakfast took me back to my student days. I’d saved the place after reading about it on an earlier visit to the Echigo-Tsumari Art Field, but by the time I came back I’d forgotten the details. It turned out to be one of my most memorable stays after years of travelling around Japan every month. The former primary school is lovingly maintained, with old school photos and artworks on the walls and exhibits about its history. I skipped the 6 a.m. group stroll because a 40-minute walk sounded too hot in midsummer, but the suspension bridge was only a short walk away, about 5-10 minutes. The scenery was amazing, and it was nice to follow the route children used to take to school. A perfect weekend away from Tokyo. I hope to see it in another season.

Finding the place in the dark and heavy rain took a little while, but the staff were waiting with dry towels when we finally got inside. Such a thoughtful welcome. I loved how the old school had been reused, and the artwork, bathhouse, and design were all so charming. They even provided yukata and teaware.

The setting is what makes this ryokan a real gem, with nature all around and a famous rope suspension bridge nearby, spanning a scenic gorge. Breakfast felt warm and homey, with local ingredients and really good Niigata rice.

The natural scenery is beautiful. I came as part of a tour, since public transport access is limited.

Looking out through the open shoji screens at the clouds in the morning, then watching the stars at night, was a lovely part of the stay. I also had a great time playing board games, table tennis, and badminton in the gymnasium for the first time in ages. The hot springs felt fantastic afterwards. The staff were friendly and thoughtful, and I really enjoyed chatting with them. I’d recommend the two-meal plan: the food was made with care, tasted incredibly good, and left me feeling happy as well as full. I’m thinking of coming back in winter to see the snowy scenery.
