The hosts cooked really well, and they kindly made me a mountain-stream fish for dinner since I don't eat meat and the usual local main dish has pork. Everything tasted great. Breakfast can be sorted in the kitchenette, where you can warm up frozen rice balls from the hosts. Sesame and salt were my favorites. I was unsure about staying in a hostel because I wanted to rest and worried it might be noisy, but it was quiet. I visited in February and found the room warm and cozy. The location is lovely for a peaceful stay, though I couldn't find any public transport, and it's a 10-15 minute walk from the station. Uchiko is about a 30 minute train ride from Matsuyama. In the Edo period, people here refined and sold wax, which was valuable enough to attract thieves. The historic street buildings have wooden grates to protect it. At one end of the street there's a Buddhist temple with a giant sleeping Buddha statue, and at the other is Uchicobare, where we stayed.

The social atmosphere was one of my favorite things here. I enjoyed meeting other guests and some of the workers, and dinner was stellar. I had a package that included it, though you can also order from the regular menu. Yama-san offers a night tour of the old movie theater just a few steps away. I really hope he can keep it from being demolished. It's a cool experience and supports a good cause. The hostel sits in one of Uchiko's historic neighborhoods, in a beautiful building that also works as a shop and restaurant/bar. The rooms keep the dark wood and old Japanese feel, and the bed cubicles are large. I liked the little fan in mine, though there wasn't much space to hang things or put bags. There's a toilet on the room floor, and more facilities downstairs with the showers. It's walkable from the station, which is handy since there aren't many buses, and it's close to most things in one of the town's touristy areas. A great hostel, and I can see myself staying again.

The hosts were warm and helpful, even offering umbrellas and cute vests for us to use. We enjoyed the night tour of the nearby old theatre led by a host, though I'm not sure how often it's available. The cozy shared space was comfortable, and the food was delicious. There's also a storefront with locally made, sustainable products that's fun to browse. Highly recommend staying here!

It felt like stepping off the usual path and into a slower rural Japanese way of life. Very welcoming and communal, and a fantastic stay!
