The yurt is spacious and has lots of facilities, and staying in one is a cool experience. But there are quite a few things to know before booking. The heater runs for only 1-2 hours before you need to put in more coins. That’s inconvenient in winter, and the owner hadn’t told us about the heating fee beforehand. The yurt also loses heat quickly, so keeping it relatively warm in winter could cost a lot. Only one or two of the pillows felt normal. The others seemed to be filled with hard plastic and were very uncomfortable. We also woke up to find a cockroach in the middle of the room. What bothered me most was the host’s manner. He seemed almost obsessively involved in what we were doing and planning, and constantly wanted to be the one talking. He gave lots of advice about what to visit and when, but I didn’t feel comfortable and always felt watched.

Mikun was friendly and took time to get to know us, while sharing lots of local knowledge about hikes, onsens, driving, and more. We’d love to stay again. The atmosphere at Daichan House felt cozy and safe, and it was close to everything we wanted to see. The Mongolian ger was roomy, warm, and comfortable. The owners supplied everything we could need, from a yu tan po and tea to towels, laundry service, and even use of their kitchen.

Mi Kun is an eccentric guy with a sense of humor, but also the kindest host we could have asked for. His deep knowledge of Yakushima made a big difference, especially since we arrived only half prepared. He tailored advice to what we wanted and helped make the trip easy. He’d regularly ask if we had clothes to wash, sometimes made us a small, tasty breakfast, and drove us to town for groceries or out to a restaurant. The room was clean, comfortable, and spacious. We booked in late October, and the blankets kept us warm through the night. Towels were provided, and the clean shower had hot water. It was a pleasant stay, and I’d highly recommend it to anyone after a different kind of experience in a yurt with a knowledgeable host. Thanks for everything, Mi Kun!

MiKun loves joking around and takes great care of his guests. After our rainy, cold hikes, he washed our clothes and got the bath ready. He even drove us to restaurants after the buses had stopped running.

Sleeping in a yurt was a nice experience, and the owners were really kind and helpful, doing their best to communicate with us. The kitchen is a little small and shared with the owners, so eating out at restaurants is probably better.
