Minshuku Sansui

My husband and I spent three nights and four days here. The dinner was extremely generous and delicious, just as other people have said, and we were very pleased. Before our trek to Jomon Sugi, they packed us a breakfast to take along, and it was filling and satisfying. The owner was friendly and had a lovely personality. I don’t know whether it was intentional, but at dinner he addressed each guest by name and enjoyed chatting with everyone. The bath was large enough to stretch out in and relax after a tiring day. Wi-Fi was excellent. It was hot on the second floor, but the room air conditioning worked well, so it wasn’t a problem. I’d definitely stay here again if I return to Yakushima.

The host was kind and the room was comfortable. I could wash my muddy hiking gear outside and hang it on the clothesline, and there was Wi-Fi. The bath was roomy enough to stretch out in. The water was quite hot, but you can adjust the temperature by adding water. They had small towels in the room, though no large bath towels. After hiking Mt. Miyanoura, I was starving, and the rice tasted so good I ate three bowls. The meals were generous and delicious, especially the fish dishes. For that amount of food, the price was very reasonable. I’d love to stay again if I visit Yakushima.

I’ve eaten out a lot since living on Yakushima, and this was easily the best food I’ve had. The portions are huge, though some people might find them too big, so talk to the owner if you’re concerned. He can seem gruff, but he’s very kind. I’d definitely stay here again if I had the chance.

The cats, Chacha and Honey, were another highlight ♡. I had a great time talking with the owner, his wife and the other guests, and we learned a lot about travelling around Yakushima. I’m sorry we couldn’t say goodbye because we had to leave early on our last day. My second son, who’s in seventh grade, and I stayed at the lodge for three days, August 7-9. The food was amazing, made with local ingredients, perfectly seasoned and very filling. They even provide breakfast bento boxes for hikers. Thanks for such a great stay!
