A nice place to spend a week, especially after a day exploring this incredible mountainous island. I enjoyed coming back, swapping stories, and sharing advice about what lay ahead. It’s a share house, not a guest house or hostel, with tenants staying anywhere from a week to six months or more. If you’re used to shared living, you’ll know the pros and cons; if you aren’t, this may not suit you. There are five rooms, I believe two are dorms, and each has a keypad lock. There’s one small common room, a kitchen with two electric cooktops, and a shared fridge. The open air veranda overlooks the port and is a nice place to sit when it isn’t too windy. There are two washing machines and one dryer, each costing ¥200 per use, plus good Wi-Fi. Free communal bikes are available, though they could use a little TLC. It’s a 10 minute walk from Miyanoura Port, and checkout at 12 pm worked perfectly for the slow boat to Kagoshima, which leaves at 1:30 pm. You’re expected to do a chore every two days, sort rubbish into eight bins, and wash your bedding and clean your room before checkout. I think paid cleaners should come in to at least clean the toilets and bathrooms. There’s one shower and separate toilet rooms for men and women.

The host was quick to answer emails before our trip, offering planning advice and suggestions for car or mountain gear rentals. During the visit, they gave us a useful short guide to the hostel and answered questions. It’s very close to Miyanoura Port, making it a handy place to stay if you’re arriving there. There’s decent cooking equipment and a grocery store nearby that stays open until 10 pm, which worked well for my vegetarian friend and me as a vegan. If you can drive, I’d strongly recommend renting a car. Check the weather about two weeks ahead too, since typhoons can completely wreck your plans.

The owners were great and very helpful, and the basic facilities were neat and clean. But I had the worst bed I’ve had in a very long time and really couldn’t sleep on it. The surroundings felt a bit miserable too. That’s the dilemma with Yakushima: you need a car to get somewhere nice, and to drive one you need an international driving licence. Be prepared.

The manager couple were the most gracious hosts I met on an island full of gracious people. The hostel is right by the port and has what you need. Even the pastel-coloured Sanyo sneaker laundry machine looks straight out of the 80s. The dorms are airy and clean, with tatami mats and comfortable beds. The common room has drinks, snacks, coffee, and tea, plus a balcony overlooking the harbour. Make time for Wakadaisho, the locals' favourite fish restaurant. It’s a lively, no-nonsense place serving the island’s best Ochazuke ( fish-in-broth-on-rice ). When the manager described their fish salad to me as "it is sooo lo-ve-ly," his look of pure ecstasy convinced me I had to go.

The staff were friendly, and the rooms were clean and cool with air conditioning. It’s about a 10 minute walk from the port. One thing to know: the office stays closed until 4 pm during the day, which is inconvenient when the main ferry arrives at 12:30. There’s no secure luggage storage available during those hours either.
