Getting there took us a while by public transport, though there’s a free shuttle from Yaga Station. A car might make the trip easier. Once there, the setting was stunning. We went in early June, and the staff kindly took us to see the fireflies. It was a magical sight, and soaking in the onsen surrounded by nature felt wonderfully relaxing. Our room had plenty of space for four and was comfortable, with hot and cold water already waiting when we arrived. The ryokan is older but spotless and clearly well maintained. Just keep in mind there’s no elevator. We were on the 3rd floor, so there was a lot of stair climbing, and it’s worth checking the room location if stairs are a concern. The food came as a generous range of beautifully arranged small dishes, and we left full and happy. Our dedicated server explained how to enjoy each one, and all the staff were warm and welcoming. The women’s public bath was spacious, clean, and lovely, with an outdoor section where you could enjoy the fresh air and scenery. There’s also a free private onsen reservation, and that was just as nice. It was an unforgettable stay, and I’d love to come back if I get the chance.

The rural setting was a highlight, and we even got a shuttle to the resort the same day. The town nearby is amazing, so I’d definitely recommend exploring the area. This ended up being my favorite place of our whole trip, even though we were only at the end of our 3 weeks in Japan. My boyfriend and I both have tattoos, and that wasn’t an issue here. The hot springs were amazing, and we could reserve a private one. While we had dinner, they prepared our futons for us. The food was good too.

The location and surroundings are stunning, and the staff were good. Dinner and breakfast were good as well, which makes the condition of the hotel a real shame. It’s very dated, and our room looked like it hadn’t been updated since the 1980s. We tried one of the private onsens, but the wood panels on the doors and around the bath were moldy. The building’s facade was moldy too, and some of the paint was rusted. With scenery like this, it’s a shame that some of the rooms are so dilapidated.

My son, daughter-in-law, grandson and I spent one night here, and we all loved it. The bathrooms were clean, and there was even a swimming pool to enjoy. Dinner and breakfast were unbelievably good, especially for a reasonable price that included both meals. Some of the facilities are a bit outdated, but the friendly staff and excellent service made the stay for us. If you’re after a typical traditional Japanese hot springs hotel away from the beaten track, this is a place to go. Thanks for having us.

For a westerner dreaming of a Japanese onsen hotel surrounded by nature, this is that dream. There are 5 different onsens to use, and I tried all of them. What an amazing place, with great food too. I’d recommend finishing your trip with a relaxing stay here.
