Shibu Onsen Sakaeya

My favorite stay of my Japan trip, for sure. The room was huge and charmingly decorated, and sitting in the private outdoor onsen watching the snow was amazing. The staff were kind, friendly, and so helpful, really going above and beyond. They kindly drove us to and from the train station and to the Snow Monkey mark. I’d recommend this place in a heartbeat.

The room was sparkling clean, the staff were super friendly, and the food was amazing. There are two private onsens, one indoors and one outdoors; the outdoor one needs a reservation and would be great for couples. This was the best Japanese onsen experience. I’d stay here again if we visit shiga another time.

Restaurants around here fill up fast and often close early, so try to sort out dinner early in the evening. Bring extra yen too, since most nearby places only take cash. The hotel is well placed for skiing, the snow monkeys, and the nine bathhouses. Such a lovely stay: the staff were warm and welcoming, and I believe it’s run by a husband and wife who couldn’t have been kinder.

The food was very good for the price, and I enjoyed the onsen. You also get a master key for nine public onsens around the area, which made trying them all a lot of fun. I arrived shortly after 10am, well before check-in, and the man at the front desk asked about my plans. When I said I was going to the monkey park, he offered to drive me there right away. After visiting, I asked the café staff outside the park to call the hotel, and they came to get me. On the way back, the driver gave me a quick tour of Shibu town so I could find my way around. They arranged a ride to Yudanaka Station the next morning, too. The transport and logistics were completely hassle-free, 10/10. I’d highly recommend this hotel.
