Shigakogen Lodge

The staff, or family, were friendly, kind, helpful, and generous. The lodge is also well placed for skiing and boarding, with a five-minute walk to the lifts. The meals were amazing. Every dinner had a mix of meats and vegetables prepared in different ways. This was some of the best food I've had in Japan over six visits. It felt like a Japanese grandma was making us a holiday dinner every night: home cooking, but fancy. I loved every meal and will miss them now that we've checked out. I gave Shigakogen Lodge five stars, though it isn't trying to feel like a Grand Hyatt or Four Seasons. I enjoyed the lodge precisely for that reason. There are shared bathrooms and a shared onsen, separated for men and women, which might surprise some Western travelers. I liked being up in a mountain lodge, with that rugged, far-from-civilization feeling.

The shared lounge, with its open fire and piano, and the onsen made this a stay we'll remember. It's great for kids aged six and nine, with essentially ski-in, ski-out access. We also rented good-quality gear from the lodge. The hosts were lovely and their hospitality incredible. The food was unbelievably good. Thank you for having us. Thank you very much

We slept on futons on the floor and the place was a little dated, but the staff were awesome, the food excellent, and the skiing great. The onsen was another highlight, and there was a lot to respect and learn about Japanese culture. For me, the appeal was the whole experience. Don't spend twice as much on a fancy hotel. Come here for the food and culture.

Great prices, amazing food, lovely owners, a cute dog, and a very Japanese experience. After skiing, the onsen was great for relaxing. The woman who owns the lodge is so friendly, works incredibly hard, and always has a smile. I'll be back!
