At 280 m elevation, the lodge offers campers two cabin choices. The basic one is just for sleeping, with no extras, and you need to bring your own bedding or rent it. We picked the other option, which costs ¥5,800 per person per night. It comes fully furnished with heating, bath items, and kitchen supplies. Bath necessities are provided, and it has a heated washlette toilet. Use of the lodge's hot spring bath is included.

We came across this rustic eatery by the roadside, run by a gentle woman who cooked everything on her own. We ordered two Wagyu set meals to share at the table barbecue, and the beef was exceptional. But the shiitake rice was the real highlight for me, savory and so good that I ate a bowl and a half.

Really good.

In March, two of us stayed one night with two meals, in a log cabin across the road from the main building with the dining area and hot springs. It was roomy enough and comfortable, especially with the warm kotatsu. I was happy to make my own futon since I prefer being left alone. The BBQ at the dining area surprised me with how good it was. There was lots of domestic marbled beef, and the old-fashioned, firm Miyazaki chicken was a treat for someone like me who enjoys chewy food. These days soft young chicken is popular, so that texture was a welcome change. The meal felt like it could have cost quite a bit in a city. They also serve quality rice from the Uchinaru rice terraces, one of Japan's Top 100 Rice Terraces, as a matter of course. This hot spring inn felt different from Beppu, and I enjoyed it.

I popped in to use the restroom, and they kindly let me. I bought matcha soft serve and ginger candy while I was there. The place seems well known for its private family baths, and I noticed lots of autographs. They also appear to rent lodges. Next time, I'd like to book ahead and try the private hot springs.
