Shimizu Ryokan

Sitting by the first-floor fireplace with drinks and snacks was one of the parts of the stay I remember best. The room was clean and well organized, and the private onsen was great. The owner and staff were kind and welcoming, and I loved the peaceful, cozy Japanese countryside feel of the village. The hot spring water was excellent. I'd happily return in another season, and recommend it to families or friends looking for a quiet hot spring getaway.

The only downside is that they don't serve meals, though there are food options in the little village down the street. The host was very friendly and accommodating, and the property is clean and well maintained while keeping its quaint charm. The cave onsen is unusual and nice, with separate areas for men and women.

Tucked away in the mountains, this was a scenic and relaxing ryokan stay. The owners and staff were so welcoming and kind. The rooms were clean, spacious, and authentically Japanese. You can book a private onsen, and the public one is incredible, with both a cave and an outdoor section. If you can, drive there. Otherwise, I believe they can arrange pickup from the station.
