The outdoor private onsen was beautiful, with mountain views, and large enough for ten people. You can book it several times for free, in 45-minute slots, unlike some ryokans that charge for private bath use. The food was a highlight too, one of the best tasting menus I’ve had, and breakfast was great. The staff were all so welcoming and friendly. Though nobody spoke English, they made a big effort to communicate, with specially printed instructions and menus. We got a nice tour and explanation of the facilities and our room. The ryokan was very clean, and we stayed in a standard tatami room. It’s about 15 minutes by bus from Yugawara station. Man-yo park is nearby, renovated with a cafe, a workspace with very yummy food, and a nicely maintained walking path with chairs. Fudo Falls is also close, with a cute tea house and a family selling handmade bamboo candle holders. From the food to the exceptional service, this was the best ryokan experience I’ve had. I highly recommend Auberge Yuraku for a cozy, relaxing break from the city, for foreigners or locals.

The dinner was at Michelin star level, and for the price it exceeded all my expectations. As a traditional style onsen, I’d call it pretty good, but the value is fantastic. Highly recommend.

For half the price or less, you get a Michelin star experience here. I actually find the flavor better than at most one Michelin star restaurants. Highly recommended.

I was really happy with how they handled the dessert at dinner, and I liked the young man who served us. The private open-air bath is charming and well worth trying. You can feel the chef’s passion in the food, though whether you like the chef’s slightly distinctive flavors is a personal thing. The building is old, as others have said, but I enjoyed that about it. It’s a lovely place to step away from daily routine, have coffee while listening to Bose, and take in the space and the passing time around Yugawara. Thank you very much.
