Mahoroba no Yu（Mahoroba no Yu） stays open for long hours, and adding them on LINE as a friend gets you a discount coupon. The indoor bath is quite large, while the stone outdoor bath isn’t so big, so choosing the right time may help. Women can also use the outdoor mist sauna, which isn’t too hot. There’s a restaurant on the grounds, Kunugi-an, set in an old Japanese-style house. They serve a variety of set meals（set meals）, and the food is delicious and filling. Juice and ice cream are also sold at reception.

So relaxing, and such a comfy place to nap after the onsen. The staff were lovely and the food was great, with nice vegetarian options. Tattoos aren’t allowed.

On 7 Dec 2023, we went to Mahoroba no yu OnsenMahoroba no Yu♨️ to spend a rainy afternoon. It was raining hard, and we didn’t have a car. This was the only place in town open until 8:30 p.m., while everything else shut at 5, so we took a taxi there. The onsen was fantastic and relaxing, but then we discovered there were no taxis in Zao after 6 p.m. We were stranded in the cold rain at 5 degrees, and walking back would have taken at least an hour and a half. The older man at reception was worried about us and tried calling everyone to find a ride, but there simply wasn’t a car available. As we wrapped ourselves up for the walk, Nagakubo-san, the distinguished owner of the onsen and guesthouse, came over. After my very broken Japanese conversation with him, he offered us a ride home. He called an employee to bring a van to the onsen, and they got us back safely. I’m so grateful for the kindness and hospitality.

We had a really good day here with family. It’s a lovely onsen where you can spend hours relaxing. I was pleasantly surprised that they customized a vegetarian Japanese lunch for us: rice, miso soup, and vegetable tempura.

A good spot for a hot spring visit. They provide clothing and shoe lockers, but bring your own bath and hand towels if you don’t want to rent them there. It closes on the second Tuesday of every month.
