Set against the magnificent backdrop of Africa's highest mountain, the glittering Mount Kilimanjaro, the luxury Amboseli Serena Safari Lodge enjoys a uniquely privileged position at the heart of this world-famous national park. Secluded within a grove of acacia trees, the safari lodge looks out over the golden savannah plains, with uninterrupted views of the mountain itself. Close by are a series of emerald green swamps, which are fed by the melting snows of Kilimanjaro. These, the only sources of water in this otherwise starkly beautiful but arid park, attract huge numbers of wallowing elephants, hippos, buffalos and plains game. Meanwhile, from the prehistoric site of Observation Hill, the sunset over Kilimanjaro is magnificent. At the centre of ‘Maasailand', the lodge's décor reflects the brilliant primary colours and iconic shapes representative of these legendary warriors. At the heart of the lodge, shaded by palm trees, is a free-form swimming pool; to either side of which stretch the rooms. Each room is housed in a single storey building opening directly on to the grounds, each reflecting a Maasai manyatta theme: each with its own hand-painted wall frescos. Our Amboseli safari lodge features a central dining area reached by a timbered bridge over a melt-water stream. The lounge and bar feature a broad terrace and a blazing fire-pit where evening cocktails can be enjoyed. Activities include daily game drives in custom-built traditional safari vehicles, ‘sundowners' on Observation Hill, bush breakfasts, bush dinners, Maasai dance performances, visits to Maasai villages and tree-planting programmes.

The game drives were a highlight. At sunrise and sunset we saw so many elephants up close, along with lions and plenty more, and the morning views of Kilimangaro were stunning. Our final evening ended with a bush barbecue under the stars, with delicious food and Maasai singing and dancing. We also found some lovely souvenirs in the gift shop, and they prepared a tasty lunch box for our departure. The whole camp feels beautiful and calm, from the gardens to the rooms, which look straight out across the plains. There’s lovely native artwork everywhere, and the pool was a relaxing spot where we could even watch elephants pass by. The Maasai warriors looking after the camp and guests from the rather cheeky monkeys were warm and kind, and happy to tell us about their culture and history. We travelled from Nairobi by train to Emali, where Joseph, our wonderful driver and guide, met us. We got a lovely welcome drink at reception, at one of only two resorts in the reserve. The staff were friendly, courteous, and helpful, and the restaurant had excellent food with plenty to suit different tastes. The chefs were happy to explain the dishes, and there was also a station where food was cooked for us. It’s a magical place, thanks to its setting, facilities, and especially the people who made the stay what it was. I’d happily come back and recommend it.

We stayed in Jan 2026 and found it good value for money. The grounds were well maintained, and the rooms were cozy. Everyone on staff was welcoming and friendly. The food was all excellent, especially the fruit. There wasn’t a huge choice, but I actually liked that. Recommended.

Sitting by the pool with a cocktail and watching animals walk past was a lovely way to take in the beautiful outlook. The setting in the heart of Amboseli Park is beautiful, and the lodge had clean rooms and good hospitality. The buffet was decent, while the salad bar stood out for its range of options. Definitely worth a visit.

The Wi-Fi only worked in reception, and the rooms didn’t have proper fans. There was no phone or walkie-talkie in our room either, which would have been handy for emergencies. We were first given three separate beds, then two were joined after we asked. The manager said they’d only been told there were three people, not that it was a family booking. The room felt small for a family with a child and a bit depressing. We stayed one night at Amboseli Serena Safari Lodge. The staff were helpful, the lodge store had a decent selection and we enjoyed shopping there. There was a good variety of meals at the restaurant, and monkeys around the property gave it a fun wildlife feel. It’s a pleasant lodge, but families with kids should arrange the beds ahead of time and keep in mind the limited in-room communication and cooling.

A peaceful, clean place inside Amboseli national park, with a lovely view of the Kilimanjaro mountain summit. It can accommodate different activities, including conferences, meetings, visits to the national park, and camping.
