Subira House

A tranquil, traditional place with a chic look and lovely decor. Breakfast was nice, and the staff were friendly.

The rooftop room we had at Subira House came with its own private terrasse, looking out over the old fort and ocean. It's a gem in Lamu town, and we absolutely loved staying there. Christina and Paul, along with the staff, were incredibly kind, attentive, and helpful, shaping our whole time in Lamu around what we needed. We ate dinner there and also had coffee, breakfast, and loads of fish samosas. Dinner isn't a la carte, but you can tell the cook in the morning what you'd like. Everything is fresh, and most of the vegetables come from their permaculture farm. It's an eco certified hotel, with dry toilets, no pool, and careful use of resources. You're staying with people who care about the community in Lamu and the environnement. They also arranged easy boat trips for us to go snorkeling or swimming, so we could explore places and spend time on the sea every day. Thank you Christina and Paul!

We came by every day for breakfast and coffee, some of the best around. Everything is homemade, especially John's bread and fresh peanut butter. Thanks too to Joshua and Enock for the coffee, and to Kennedy and Rosemary for looking after us so well. Everyone who works there is generous, warm, and kind. Subira House feels like a beautiful oasis where you can feel right at home. We'll be back to stay, and for yoga and dinner.

The people on the island were all very friendly, and the other guests seemed happy too, which made for a lovely atmosphere. The staff were wonderful, with those big, easy Kenyan smiles, and did everything they could to help us enjoy the stay. Breakfast was great, and the dinner we had was delicious. We arrived stressed, but it was so relaxing we might need to be wheeled out! I recommend booking an evening dhow trip to watch the sunset through the hotel manager Mohammed. We're staying here now, it's magnificent, and we'll be back.
