The Red Pepper House

The mosquitoes were the main thing that interrupted our fun, though the Red Pepper House staff did a lot to reduce the problem. There was bed netting and repellent spray, and turning up the ceiling fan made them almost a non-issue. The rest of our four-night New Year’s stay was a wonderful way to finish two weeks of travelling around Kenya. Our family of four, with kids aged 12 and 15, had stayed in top lodgings elsewhere, but nowhere made us feel as relaxed and at home as this place did. We loved slowing down in the breezy sitting areas, swimming in the pool and warm seawater, and walking the beach to watch all the different crabs scurry around at low tide. Breakfast each day was filling, with fresh fruit, made-to-order omelettes, and Kenyan baked specialties. Dinner was gourmet, usually with seafood freshly caught off Lamu. Joseph met us warmly at the airport, then we took a short boat ride straight to the Red Pepper House. Kasena and Faith greeted us with fresh juice and cool towels. Our nyumbas each had a bedroom, bathroom, living space, veranda, and private enclosed beach area, and they were kept immaculate every day. Joseph also showed us Lamu Town and Shela. He was a confident guide through the town’s labyrinth, sharing its history and culture and greeting people he knew along the way. He let us linger wherever something caught our interest, especially at Lamu Market and Lamu Fort. Kasena took us out for two sun-downers, one sailing on the dhow and another watching the sunset while swimming at the pristine beach on Manda Island. Lamu left us mesmerised, and we’ve been raving about it to family and friends since getting home. That very positive stay was largely thanks to the friendly, professional staff at the Red Pepper House.

The bathroom wasn’t very clean, and Red Pepper could do better there. The food was okay. It’s a beautiful place, though, and the staff were kind and welcoming and took care of everyone’s needs.

There were lots of mosquitoes, but the chef was good and the food was great. They also give guests sandalwood oil soaps for free. The pool is the reason I’m not giving this a five-star rating, even though the experience had a five-star feel.

We miss Lamu already and can’t wait to return. Our stay was perfect, and we completely fell in love with the place. Joseph and his wonderful team made us feel so welcome and took such good care of us. Thanks for everything, xo!
