Rhino Camp

We found it to be an okay option for the location and price. The staff were friendly, and the food was okay. We stayed two nights, but the room felt worn out, and the bathroom clearly needed maintenance. It was out of service after the first night. The public toilets had no soap or even lighting.

For the price and location, it's cost-effective and has the basic facilities. As a young Asian woman, though, I felt patronised a few times by the male local manager and workers. It's minor in the bigger picture, but it bothered me enough that I wanted to leave a review.

The grounds were clean and well kept, with a communal fire pit and dining hall. Our group of nurses had a comfortable, welcoming stay after volunteering. Rooms were simple and clean, with mosquito nets, a good-sized bathroom, warm showers, and daily cleaning. We were about a 20-minute walk from the Masai Village, where guided tours are offered. Breakfast and dinner were buffet-style, with a good, simple mix of healthy food. George the chef was great and very accommodating as a vegetarian. He even checked my packed lunch with me before safari. There's also a small bar serving beer and soda.

Silvia welcomed us, helped with our bags, and showed us around. She was so lovely, and George in the kitchen remembered I was vegetarian and pointed out what I could and couldn't eat at each meal. The staff were incredibly hospitable and friendly. I was surprised by how large the camping tent was. The bed was firm, which my back appreciated after a day in the car. There was an attached private bathroom with hot water and a western toilet, plus 24-hour electricity, lights, and power outlets. It was a beautiful place to stay while exploring Masai Mara. Standards may differ from what you're used to in a first-world country, but I'd absolutely recommend it and would stay again if I get the chance to return.
